Sri Lanka affirms commitment to India’s security amidst regional concerns

In efforts to revive the tourism sector, Balasuraiya extended an invitation to Indian tourists, highlighting Sri Lanka’s diverse attractions.

Sri Lanka has reiterated its commitment to not allow its land to be used by any third country to jeopardize India’s security concerns, following reports of a Chinese spy vessel docking in Maldives waters.

On the sidelines of the ongoing 9th edition of the Raisina Dialogue in Delhi, Sri Lanka’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Tharaka Balasuriya, stated, “India should not be worried about security concerns. We recognize India’s growing stature, and we will not allow any third party or country to compromise India’s security. Through honest and candid exchange of views, we can overcome any problem.”

Until October 2023, China was permitted to dock its spy ship in Sri Lankan waters, raising India’s concerns about potential surveillance of the region. However, earlier this year, Colombo banned entry of Chinese research vessels, signalling increased cooperation following New Delhi’s significant financial and material assistance.

Responding to questions about China’s influence in Sri Lanka, Balasuriya emphasized the special relationship with India, rooted in shared civilization and cultural ties. He highlighted the importance of trade with various countries, including China, but assured that Sri Lanka prioritizes its relationship with India.

Regarding security concerns, Balasuriya reassured New Delhi, stating, “We are open for business with any country, but our relationship with India is special. India should not worry about our relations with China. We maintain good relations with Western countries, the US, Russia, and the Middle East.”

In efforts to revive the tourism sector, Balasuraiya extended an invitation to Indian tourists, highlighting Sri Lanka’s diverse attractions. Sri Lanka recently announced free tourist visas until March for visitors from seven countries, including India, to boost tourism.

Expressing gratitude for India’s assistance during economic crises, Balasuraiya commended the strong bilateral relationship, particularly India’s support with a USD 4.5 billion loan during tough times. He thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Finance Minister for their support and highlighted India’s active involvement in IMF negotiations, reflecting the effectiveness of India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy.
